| A Family Healing |
I first began attending Bikram Yoga classes to see if I could heal some injuries that I had sustained as a result of years of variety of sports. I could tell almost an immediate improvement of some muscle imbalances that have developed and were perpetuating ongoing discomfort. Shortly thereafter my oldest daughter asked if she could try class. She was 16 at the time and because of having a history of congenital hip dislocation resulting in a fair amount of limited range of motion in her hip and the possibility of needing a hip replacement at some time in her adulthood, I strongly encouraged it. She grew to really enjoy the challenging classes and has noted improved mobility in her hip as well . She now attends Bikram classes in Raleigh where she is a student at NC State. My husband, David, had been experiencing significant hip pain from a labral tear and was rapidly approaching the need for arthroscopic surgery when I suggested to him that he try Bikram. A typical first response is one of "you got to be kidding me". I told him that this will be one of the hardest things he will ever do but may also keep him from surgery. The first week he did classes he actually had an increase in his hip pain and even though he listened to Trudy who told him this was a normal process I am not sure he actually believed her as his hip was telling him otherwise. After the first week of class, we went away for a Christmas trip to NYC. He noticed that he was not experiencing any hip pain and was commenting that it must be that he was not taking any classes! But after getting back home, he decided to try class again and see what happened and amazingly the hip pain was gone and he has been pain free now for almost 3 months!! Lastly , this past weekend, our youngest daughter Stephanie tried her first class. At 14, I questioned whether she would be able to stay focused through this 90 minute class. Through the very positive encouragement of the instructor, she did the entire class and even though she said it was the hardest thing she has ever done out of all of her athletics, she said she will be back . I believe that attending class will hopefully limit her potential for injury from all of her sports. We have always taken a family approach to many of our sports and other activities and this is now another family activity that we can share but more importantly we can share the healing benefit of Bikram Yoga that will last us a lifetime.
